Starting just after :25 I timed the acela start to finish a few times and came up with 3.8 seconds. The Acela is 663? feet long, so 663/3.8=174.5 fps, 174.5*60(min)*60 (hour) divided by 5280'(mile)=119mph. That's pretty fast. I got a couple at 3.3 seconds which is close to 140mph

Lets be serious. Shinkansen speeds vary from 220km/h to 300km/h but there are very, very few places that allow more than 270km/h. Until recently they were all on the JR west Sanyo section and then only for the 500's. Then came the N700's. Since the E5's were introduced it looks like the Tohoku line will have 320km/h sections. I know the Japanese are years ahead of the US in high speed train operations but for? discussion purposes it would be good to stick with the realities.

Yeah, during testing near Kingston RI, the Acela hit 168.9 mph, and in Mansfield/Attleboro, it hit 165.4 mph.? There's an urban legend that an Amtrak engineer tried to make up for lost time, and hit 166 mph, at the next station, he was fired. XD

I think everyone needs to be aware that the reason our passenger rail? system is not as good as foreign countries is because the freight rail system is more profitable to the U.S. As the freight rail trains are not moving quickly, we can't intervene and use high speed trains on the same rail. 150 mph. But it is still pitiful compared to Europe's services. And the really sad part is this is that the NEC is the only high speed line in the entire nation. Our government ruined out passenger network and now? we barely have one at all. I live in a city of 1.2 million people and we only see one round trip train at 6 AM and Midnight.

Nice! I made the same type of video. It's reversed, but when the video's going? the right direction, we were on the SB track heading North! So reversing it made it look like a legit cabride!! The heritage cars are good for 110mph on the NEC. This location is just south of Elkton, Maryland. 19 is on 1 track which is rated for? 110mph and and the high speed is on 3 which is rated for 130mph on the curve. Good footage.

Both were headed south. Timetables from that timeframe will show the Acela overtaking the Crescent along this stretch... for the Acela, a later departure from Wilmington and an earlier arrival in Baltimore than the Crescent. Afterall, the Crescent is a considerably slower train, and? almost inevitably, an Acela would catch up to it at some point between NYC and DC.

What they really need? is new, low-cost, low-maintanence equipent. Amtrak just broke another ridership and revanue (profits record on the Acela Express) and the system is filled to capacity. They beat America's 6th largest airline in numbers with nearly 29 million passengers. Amtrak is ordering the same old Amfleet pieces of junk that cost too much when there are far cheaper and more cost effective options out there. It's mismanagement on Amtrak's part.

If you think trains are subsidized, try the airlines. We pay for the terminals, the runways, the air control system, the planes, and about 80% of EVERY airline ticket is paid for by subsidies. When I say the government spends more on highways and airlines I mean A LOT more. $10 billion EVERY YEAR is poured into the highways alone. In the 37 years that Amtrak has existed, it has recieved a total of about $900 million in it's lifetime. A cleaner, faster railway network is far more economically friendly to build than upgrading highways or airlports. In fact, building a brand-new, national 220 mph rail network would? be about 1/4-1/2 the cost of upgrading airports and highways.

I reankly haven't got the faintest clue why they just? didn't take the perfectly available Thalys (I have been in the thing and I loved it) and why they had to bother with privatising it in order to comform with "European standards" while simply building the line and letting the SNCF go all the way to Amsterdam would have been sufficient. And then we could have started with a HSL Oost as well and have the ICE go to Amsterdam now. (it goes there now but now in high-speed).

Another nice costly event. The Belgians showed little signs of collaboration. Our government was inconsqeuent and downright bad in it's planning and the Italian company that is responsible for the train kept on? stalling -- why I don't know but they were a disaster. I still think we should have gone with the Germans as they at least have the train, . Although we now have the train (Fyra) but I really haven't got a clue what they are up to.

The problem is that more people think that way. I was the assistant of a lorry driver when I was 17/18 (doing all the paper work and helping with loading up stuff) and we left at around half past 3 in the morning and believe it or not: we usually ended up in traffic jams at around 5 , half past 5 in the morning so it's no real guarantee. It would work a bit if there would be more developed transport network in? the US (I have heard they have jams all day round)

On the weekend I can drive to work in 20 minutes. During the week it takes me 45 minutes to an hour. If we had a bus route that was fairly direct there, plus ran after 5, I'd take it. I should also add that Acela is as heavy as it is because it shares trackage with freight trains for almost all of its run, whereas ICE and TGV trains spend very little time on shared trackage. Even if Amtrak weren't in the picture, the trains would be heavy. The ICE and X2000 trains that tested here ran under FRA waivers because European trains do not meet? US buffing standards (about 800,000 pounds of compression) and collision resistance standards.

Yeah, I don't know why I posed this question - I already know the answer. The overhead catenary network is very old and probably needs? a total overhaul. To my knowledge, all the tracks along the NEC have been updated with concrete ties and continuously welded rail

As somebody said, there's little respect in US to state-run enterprises and projects, probably due to confusion between "state-run" and "communist". IMHO there are at least a few more places in the US where a high-speed train could be built.?

these Acela trains are restricted to the eastern part of the country. You can keep Amtrak that runs in the midwest. Your train is? very nice of course about as I say, just a few privileged souls can use it. We did use Amtrak to and from Denver a few years back. First class sleeper compartment. Too bad Amtrak can't use the Swedish style sleeper. Did that from Stockholm to Östersund. Nice and reasonable compared to Amtrak.

Heh, Acela is twice the weight of a TGV. But it's likely this isn't a maximum? speed section of the line. Search "Acela" "high speed" for video of these trains on high-speed trackage.
