1. Not really. The ballistic difference between .30-06 M2 and .303 British Mk VII was minuscule, the 06's higher velocity being offset by the .303's higher ballistic coefficient at long range. And the average grunt wouldn't? be able to tell the difference either. 2. Well you're comparing two completely different technologies, semi-automatic vs bolt action. If the M1 were to be operated as a straight pull bolt action, it would lose to the enfield.
By: rexkablooey62. on 17 May 12, 15:57:33
This gun has NOTHING ON THE M1 GARAND! Why? 1.The .30-06 reaches farther and punches harder 2. The M1 is? semi-automatic, giving it a higher rate of fire than even the vaunted Lee-Enfield

By: HatersGonnaHate1000. on 07 May 12, 03:40:01
>Their Army was overall better Jesus Christ, are you disabled? World War 2 was a joined effort. But if you're implying that America tipped the tide, they didn't. Russia did when they reclaimed? Stalingrad. Hitler knew the war was lost as soon as he lost the river Volga.
By: Delogros. on 03 May 12, 18:14:21
Except they did compare it... Garand came 4th by? the way :)

The Mosin was cheap to manufacture, tough, and accurate, but not as easy to operate. Mauser 98 was also extremely accurate and nearly as tough as the Mosin, but a bit more complicated and expensive. Ditto with the Springfield, as it was essentially a Mauser variant with a mag cutoff. The Enfield was smooth operating and feeding, very accurate, but the .303 lacked power in comparison. The Lebel was innovative at the? time, but became obsolete due to the tube mag and cartridge. M95 - not so amazing
By: englishalan222. on 01 May 12, 20:02:35
Which is the best bolt action Rifle, the Russian Mosin-Nangant, the German 98K, the Austrian Mannlicher, the US Springfuield or even the French Lebel or the British Lee? enfield. Well that is hard to say, the jury is still out, all were reliable and accuate, but the Enfield hold ten rounds in the mag whilst the others five, so there was less reloading. The above rifles served their countries well both world Wars
By: englishalan222. on 01 May 12, 19:54:11
At Mons? in 1914 the rifle fire from Tommies armed with the Lee Enfield was so rapid that the Germans were convinced that they were up against rows of machine-guns. As for ww2 the M1 garande was faster firing, with no need to work the bolt but was less accurate, that is why US still used a bolt action rifle as its standard sniper weapon in ww2, they used I I believe the Springfield, whereas Lee Enfield was used as a sniper rifle right up into the 1970s
By: SnazZgamingZ. on 01 May 12, 16:39:44
garand has nothin on the lee enfield?
By: Kingkiel13. on 01 May 12, 03:53:50

By: gixxerlouis. on 28 Apr 12, 12:49:42
Doesn't? compare to the m1 garande
By: h2otek. on 12 Apr 12, 01:28:32
Yeah, just try and see what happens if you remove a loaded magazine! After you get through cussing and picking up all the rounds which fell to the ground you realize that it isn't *really* a detachable magazine in the most common sense. But yes,? you can remove it. Empty /first/, please!
By: h2otek. on 12 Apr 12, 01:20:26
This discussion started out being on the #4, which absolutely has aperture sights and other refinements. If we were talking old #1 then I'd? agree with you- wouldn't put it above the Springfield or K98 at all.
By: h2otek. on 12 Apr 12, 01:15:32
BTW, my standard issue non-sniper will group at 3 to 4" @ 100 yards if I feed it decent ammunition (even with .312 bullets). And mine was? Afghanistan surplus with a less than perfect bore. Can't do that with any open sight rifle any longer.
By: h2otek. on 12 Apr 12, 01:10:28
Ironically ammunition is spec'd at .311- .312 while the bores are normally .314-.315. Is that the rifle's fault? Some have made bullet molds to cast the proper diameter with excellent results. BTW- most battle rifles are STILL only required to be in that ballpark. As to the standings, if we? are talking as-issued and used I would disagree. The #4Mk1 got the job done and is a more user friendly rifle. If you speak of potential for customization or raw strength, the K98 or M1917/P14 get the nod.
By: littlepowerbit. on 12 Apr 12, 00:40:22
This is going no where. Let me just say this. Only one Enfield is officially designated a SMLE, that is the no.1 mark III. All else after are not SMLE's, they are different Enfields. You disagree, I get that. I respect? your knowledge and opinion, good day.
By: Boutiquez. on 11 Apr 12, 23:19:26
I? can't agree with that. The Lee-Metford and the Lee Enfield differed in only two 'significant' respects - length and rifling-type. The LM used Metford rifling and the LE used Enfield rifling. Enfield rifling was introduced to improve long range accuracy. Both rifles used the same basic action, a Lee, which was feed via a magazine. After the new, shorter LE was introduced all subsequent rifles of that type were know as SMLEs. That is SHORT, MAGAZINE LEE ENFIELDs.
By: littlepowerbit. on 11 Apr 12, 21:18:45
I'm not being clear. The only reason the acronym SMLE exists is to distinguish the Lee-Enfield from the Lee-Metford which was similar to? the Enfield design. They added the Magazine, hence the M,made it shorter and made it shoot smokeless ammo.So we have the MLM,MLE and then the SMLE or Lee-Enfield No.1 mark 111.That was the first SMLE, and the only one. After that point only SMLE's were used.So why would you call the rest SMLE's when they aren't being compared to anything? That's what I meant.
By: Boutiquez. on 11 Apr 12, 06:55:49
Not sure I understand the distinction you're making. In most significant respects the No.4 is much the same as its predecessors, in that it is a short, magazine Lee Enfield. If the? No 4, had been significantly increased in length, for example, it could no longer be described as a SMLE. But that isn't the case.
By: littlepowerbit. on 11 Apr 12, 03:22:54
A clarification too, the no.1 mark III rifles were official designated SMLE's, but the mark 1 was the first SMLE design that beat out the MLM and? MLE designs. So I see what you're saying, but was just being technical and well informed.
By: littlepowerbit. on 11 Apr 12, 03:20:21
SMLE refers to the No.1 mark III rifles. In order for that title to make sense in a no.4 there would have to be an Enfield that was longer, otherwise? the distinction does not have to be made.
By: vito445. on 10 Apr 12, 17:36:00
That is a good plan; being somone who greatly appreciates vintage bolt action rifles/WWII rifles, getting both? in time is inevitable XD
