As to the great tab v. notation debate, tab can be useful, but nobody can deny it is more limiting than notation. (Otherwise, there would have been no move from it). If you can only read tab, take the time and learn notation. After that, or at the same time, learn to sight sing. Don't let anyone, including you, limit you. I? might be incorrect about this, but I read that Jimmy Page didn't learn notation until he taught himself as an adult.

Musically, this etude is simple, but I truly envy those for whom it is a technical 'easy' because it took many years before I could usually play it with no major error. Even then, I had to eliminate rubato as expedience to mask the move from? F# - Bm in measures 8-9, 32-33, 40-41. For 40-41, I hit on lifting barre from strings 4 & 5 (but not from 1) to sound open d and maintain f#. Finally I can focus on tone/tempo. The Maestro's inspiring performance is a perfect model for a lifetime of study.

Now the concepts it is teaching are not elementary, but rather sophisticated.. so to "get" what he wanted to convey might take several active listens. It is a study of subtlety, and surprise... Well unless you're? playing Frank Zappa's insane polyrhythms or something, I have a good system to enhance tablature. You write the tablature underneath and make a sheet music line above to record the rhythm.

Neither Segovia og Presti plays like? rythmboxes - when you accept that it is basically romantic interpretations its an art of its own. I love Segovia but I must say that I find Prestis interpretation has sparkling qualities - sure she twist the music but its part of here tale - and I think its a wonderful statement she delivers. The first two published versions of this piece were an 1810 version published as Sonata Prima by Salvador Castro and an 1822 version published as Grand Solo by Meissonnier. While neither of these versions is known to be definitive, guitarists in recent years have shown a preference for the Meissonier edition, which Kanengiser uses almost exclusively in this performance. Barrueco,? on the other hand, plays Aguado's 1849 arrangement of Sor's Grand Solo.
