They were anything but racist. The skinhead movement actually was born out of rude boy Jamaican culture by a large influx of Jamaican immigrants to England in the 60s. They bonded over music, style, and the fact that they were working class people. A small portion of them began to harass Pakistani immigrants, so the media began to label? the whole skinhead identity as "neo-nazi" but the majority of them weren't. Well, that's not the only reason. Ska, Rocksteady, Dancehall, etc were West Indies music that represented ALL the Working Class in Britain, which is why the Brits used the music as a way of inter-mingling with their new neighbors. Once Ska slowed down to "Reggae", and the lyrics "Black Nationalist" based and not class based, it was viewed as betrayal by the Brits, and turned into "If they can be proud to be Black, than I? can have White Pride". Reggae is responsible for racial tension in Britain

agreed 100% I don't know if the airflow is reversed by the diaphragm or if it's a tounge technique for fast passages.... I have a Hohner Super 64 - I know how it works and I did some fair amount of practising (I am a pianist/keyboarder/arranger etc.) - just to find out that it is a waste of time. I will end up mediocre at the most. I leave that to the greats? like Toots.

Don't listen to those naysayers. The chromatic Harmonica is an excellent lead instrument - if played by total genuises like Toots or Stevie it is every bit as expressive and soulful as? it gets.

Toots was a holdout when Rastafarianism hit Jamaica; he never joined up and you you won't hear those themes in his lyrics. This is one of the reasons I use Toots & the Maytals to introduce people to reggae... because their perception of reggae is frequently of a bunch of white college kids wearing red/gold/green and smoking pot,? claiming it's their religion (see Ras Trent haha). This is GOOD MUSIC, with a positive message and a good beat. Who can complain?

I shared a stage with Toots once, in a very small jazz club in Leiden! He droppped in on? my gig after he finished a concert elsewhere in town. After one or two drinks he enjoyed our motivated but mediocre session and honoured us by joining in on our jamsession! And it's amazing how his presence, timing and sheer musicality seemed to raise the level of play of our combo and all the guest soloists! Absolutely amazing :) Thank you Toots for your encouraging words and an unforgettable evening.

4 me he's the larry bird of? the haromnica players don't get me wrong bird is my favorite nba player ever even i never could watch bird play :'( but but i'm happy i coul'd watch toots play it was yesterday @ jazz Middelheim a famous jazz festival in my country (belgium) it's 4 days long but i only went 2 watch him & bert joris play the only 2 things that makes me proud 2 be a belgium so that's 1 of the reasons i never could see bird play and allso is just born back in 1990 ;)
